What to Pack in Your Child’s First Day Bag
Starting childcare represents a significant milestone for both children and families. Proper preparation, including packing the right items, can make this transition smoother and help your child feel secure and comfortable. At Little Pioneers Early Learning Centre Charlotte Bay, we’ve supported countless families through first days and know exactly what children need to thrive in our care.
The Essential Checklist
Every child needs several fundamental items for a successful childcare day. Spare clothes are absolutely essential—at least two complete changes including shirts, pants, underwear, and socks. Young children have accidents, spill during meals, get messy during play, and need fresh clothes multiple times daily. Label everything clearly with your child’s name.
Nappies and wipes should be packed in adequate quantities if your child isn’t yet toilet trained. We recommend sending at least six nappies for full-day care. A comfort item from home—perhaps a small blanket, soft toy, or dummy—helps children feel secure during rest times and emotional moments.
At our childcare Charlotte Bay centre, we provide meals and snacks, but you’ll need to pack bottles if your baby is formula-fed, along with formula measured into containers. Sun protection is crucial—a named, broad-brimmed hat that stays at childcare protects children during outdoor play.
Clothing Considerations
Choose clothing thoughtfully for childcare days. Practical, comfortable clothes that allow independent movement and play work best. Avoid delicate fabrics or special outfits you’d be upset to see stained. Select shoes children can manage independently—Velcro closures work better than laces for young children developing self-help skills.
Consider weather-appropriate layers. Mornings might be cool whilst afternoons warm up, so light jumpers children can remove independently help them stay comfortable. At our early learning centre in Charlotte Bay, we spend considerable time outdoors, so practical clothing matters.
Personal Care Items
Personal care items ensure hygiene and comfort throughout the day. Sunscreen in a clearly labeled bottle allows reapplication during outdoor play. Some families prefer sending their own brands, particularly for sensitive skin. Nappy cream if your child needs it should be clearly labeled with application instructions.
Medication requires special attention. Any regular medication must come with a completed medication form signed by parents, clear dosage instructions, and original packaging. Our educators cannot administer medication without proper documentation.
Bedding for Rest Time
Most children require rest or sleep during the day. Fitted cot sheets that fit our standard cots provide familiar, comfortable sleeping surfaces. A small blanket offers additional comfort and security. Some children sleep better with familiar bedding from home carrying comforting scents.
All bedding goes home weekly for washing, so label everything clearly and pack it in a named bag.
What NOT to Pack
Certain items should stay home for safety reasons. Toys from home often cause conflicts and may get lost or damaged—we provide abundant age-appropriate toys. Jewellery poses choking and injury risks. Money and valuables have no place in childcare bags. Food items (unless specifically required for allergies) aren’t needed as we provide all meals and snacks.
Labeling Everything
We cannot stress enough the importance of labeling. Use permanent marker or iron-on labels on every single item—clothes, shoes, bottles, comfort items, hats, and bags. Items without names inevitably get mixed up or lost, causing distress for children and inconvenience for families.
The First Day Bag
For the very first day, consider packing a special note or photo from home in your child’s bag. Many children find comfort discovering these surprises during the day. A family photo in their cubby provides reassurance during emotional moments.
Ongoing Bag Checks
Establish a routine of checking and restocking your child’s bag each evening. Remove soiled clothes, replenish nappies and wipes, ensure spare clothes fit as your child grows, check comfort items are present, and verify everything is labeled.
This routine prevents morning stress when you discover missing essentials.
Supporting School Readiness
As children mature, involve them in packing routines. This builds responsibility, independence, and organizational skills—important aspects of school readiness. Even toddlers can help pack their comfort toy or choose which spare shirt to bring.
Communication with Educators
Our childcare Charlotte Bay educators appreciate notes about anything unusual—disrupted sleep, illness in the family, or changes at home affecting your child’s emotions. These insights help us provide more responsive, personalized care.
Settling In
Remember that the first days involve adjustment. Your child might use more spare clothes than usual, need their comfort item frequently, or require extra reassurance. This is completely normal. We’re here to support you both through this transition.
