The Importance of a Smooth Transition into School

One of the biggest steps for a child is the transition between daycare and school. It can be a stressful situation for any child as well as the family. Luckily, there are programs available to make the transition easier for everyone involved, especially the child.

Research shows that a child who experiences a positive transition into school is more likely to succeed in their education and social development. This is why we at Little Pioneers take planning this shift seriously and prepare our children for this transition.

A successful transition is the combined responsibility of the family, the early learning centre, and the school and all must work together to achieve the best result. It is the responsibility of the educators to bring everyone together to discuss a transition plan that will best meet the needs of the child, with the understanding that every child is unique and will experience a different journey.

Recognising that every child is unique and the way they handle situations will differ is crucial when building a transition process. The process should be tailor made for each individual child in a collaborative setting, keeping communication open between the child, the family and the educators. Building trust and familiarity between all parties involved will also help smooth out the transition and ultimately provide a more positive experience.

At Little Pioneers, our early childhood professionals recognise that every journey is different. This is why we put particular emphasis in the importance of building a plan based around the individual child. Our educators do this by:

  • Recognising that every child is unique and will handle situations differently
  • Playing to a child’s strengths and interests in meaningful ways
  • Working closely with families and schools to build strong relationships
  • Conversing regularly with the child and parents to acknowledge their concerns
  • Building trust based on shared experiences, mutual respect, and empathy
  • Learning as much as they can about the child to prepare them
  • Passing on information about a child’s development and dispositions to the school
  • Seeking continuity of learning to adapt the child’s learning to a new context
  • Using familiarity to help acclimatise the child to the school context

Little Pioneers takes various points into account when assisting in the preparation of a school transition plan. Our ultimate goal is to make the transition as smooth as possible for the child to improve their overall experience and help them succeed.
